Heart Arrhythmmia during pregnancy
By Iris Lee
Last week, my gynecologist was checking my blood pressure when she noticed some weird 'skips' between my heartbeats. I was given an ECG to confirm that I have irregular heartbeat and was referred to a cardiologist to follow up on my heart condition. Before going to the cardiologist, I surfed the internet and came up with a 'Heart Arrhythmia'. Heart Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) is common during pregnancy. Symptoms include palpitations which is a feeling of skipped heart beats, pounding in the chest, feeling dizzy, having shortness of breath, feeling discomfort in the chest and fatigue. There are many reasons or causes as to why heart arrhythmia occurs during pregnancy from the change of her hormones to that of her lifestyle. So if you're smoking or taking alcohol or drinking caffeine (such as tea, cola, coffee) and using any stimulants or doing these things altogether, best to limit your intakes now. There are certain drugs which are harmless to the unborn child. During my visit to the cardiologist, he took a measure of my heart rate and it was a 96 beats per minute. A healthy heart beats an average of 70 bpm. He found nothing wrong with my heart. In fact, he even mentioned that my I have a strong heart and its beating steadily. Later my cardiologist prescribed me a mild dosage of Concor and I was told to wait for an hour to test the effect. My heart rate later dropped to an 88 bpm. However there is a German professor in Stuttgart who wrote in a German medical trade magazine that pregnant women can treat the problem themselves with techniques such as a so-called vagal maneuver which helps slow the racing heart beat. This is done by exhaling hard against closed vocal cords which raises the pressure in the chest cavity. Thus, this (usually) slows down the heart beat. Berlin's Charite hospital director of obstetrics Dudenhausen also mentioned that massaging the throat can help calm the racing heartbeat. I also asked my cardiologist if I am still able to do any exercises. He encouraged me to do more exercises such as walking as this slows the heart rate. But always listen to your body. If you are tired, stop, rest. Heart Arrhythmia is usually harmless to mothers and their babies but there is a need to ascertain the factor of the palpitation and the fast heart beat. |
